Horses and ponies naturally ingest sand and soil while grazing. Small amounts that pass through the digestive tract are normally harmless. However, animals grazing primarily in dry and sandy areas are at risk of consuming excessive amounts of sand and dust. This can lead to dangerous sand colic. In these cases, we recommend feeding NAF Sand Gard as a seven-day course once a month.

Product detailed description

Horses and ponies naturally ingest sand and soil while grazing. Small amounts that pass through the digestive tract are normally harmless. However, animals grazing primarily in dry and sandy areas are at risk of consuming excessive amounts of sand and dust. This can lead to dangerous sand colic. In these cases, we recommend feeding NAF Sand Gard as a seven-day course once a month.

Sand Gard Pellets are tasty and easy to feed. They support healthy intestinal movement (intestinal peristalsis) and provide herbal ingredients to help naturally “eliminate” excess material that has accumulated in the intestines.

They also provide live probiotic yeast to support a healthy population of beneficial microflora in the gut. Sand Gard Pellets can be fed regularly to maintain optimal long-term intestinal health in horses that may ingest larger amounts of sand from the ground.

Psyllium husks are particularly useful. The husks contain swelling substances that form a mucilaginous gel when they come into contact with liquid. This absorbs unwanted sand and helps transport it out of the digestive tract together with the intestinal contents.

What is sand colic? Sand colic occurs when horses are kept for too long on heavily eroded pastures or sandy paddocks. Eating feed from sandy soil also increases the risk of sand colic, as the horse ingests additional soil and sand together with the forage. The danger is that the horse’s intestine is approximately 30 metres long and contains numerous loops. Sand and soil can accumulate there and obstruct the intestines. Sand can also irritate the intestinal lining. All of this can lead to colic and free faecal water (further known as “cow pat” or “watered faeces”).
