Product detailed description
More Muscles is a complete, carefully formulated and clinically tested complementary feed for horses designed to support the growth and development of healthy muscles.
-
Scientifically developed to support muscle development during periods of intensive training and rapid muscle growth, during rehabilitation, in preparation for sale, or in underdeveloped horses of any age.
-
Contains key amino acids, including lysine and leucine, from high-quality protein sources such as whey, spirulina, linseed and soya.
-
Contains important antioxidants, including vitamin E and selenium, as well as rosemary and dried grape extract to support muscle function and health.
-
Contains rice bran, providing additional oil-based calories to support condition.
-
Contains probiotics to support gut health and feed utilisation.
Horses need muscles to support and move the skeleton through the joints, tendons and ligaments. In addition, competition horses rely on these muscles to carry the rider and perform the required athletic tasks.
Muscles are primarily made up of protein building blocks called amino acids. There are amino acids that horses can produce themselves, but some, known as essential amino acids, must be obtained from the diet. There are 9 essential amino acids, and research has shown that at least two are particularly important for muscle development – lysine and leucine.
Building muscle is not simply about feeding more non-specific protein:
-
The first requirement for building more muscle is appropriate exercise and training – horses that are not being worked cannot develop muscle. They may gain condition if provided with more energy and protein, but they will not build muscle unless those muscles are exercised and trained.
-
The second requirement for muscle development during work is an adequate supply of protein, particularly certain key building blocks – amino acids. Research has shown that the two most important or limiting amino acids are lysine and leucine.
-
The third requirement is that, to achieve the desired level of development, the horse must receive sufficient energy in its diet.
More Muscles does not rely on a single protein source but contains a blend of high-quality protein sources providing complementary levels of key amino acids, including lysine and leucine, from whey protein, spirulina, linseed and soya.
In addition, More Muscles contains high-oil rice bran, providing additional non-starch calories to support energy requirements.
During strength training, muscles produce free radicals that can contribute to oxidative damage. More Muscles therefore also provides key antioxidant micronutrients, vitamin E and selenium, as well as plant-based antioxidants including dried grape extract and rosemary extract.
A healthy gut microbiome is essential for proper digestion and feed utilisation, helping ensure that energy levels can support the work required for muscle development. More Muscles contains a high level of probiotic yeast to support gut function.
There are many reasons why horses may need support for muscle development. Ensure that underlying clinical conditions, including pain, are ruled out by consulting a veterinarian, equine physiotherapist and other appropriate therapists or a saddle fitter. Once any underlying issues have been resolved or ruled out, More Muscles pellets can provide additional support for muscle development as part of a balanced feeding and training programme.
Research has shown that muscles take up amino acids after exercise to support their growth. Therefore, where possible, More Muscles pellets should be given in the first suitable feed after exercise for optimal effect.
What are the main benefits of More Muscles pellets?
-
Whey protein isolate, spirulina, linseed and soya provide a range of important essential amino acids, including lysine and leucine. This is more suitable than relying on a single source to support muscle development.
-
Antioxidants including 1,000 mg of vitamin E and 0.25 mg of selenium, as well as plant antioxidants from dried grape extract and rosemary, help support muscle health in competition horses.
-
Stabilised rice bran provides very low-starch energy due to its high oil content, supporting energy requirements and helping improve condition.
-
Probiotics help support a healthy gut microbiome to optimise digestion and feed utilisation.
